Markets traded in risk off mode during Friday's session, with heightened volatility, as investors reacted to the latest social media announcement by the US President regarding its trade agenda. Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on the EU and a 25% levy on Apple if the company refused to relocate its manufacturing to the US.In this scenario, euro area sovereign yields fell amid a slight flight to quality, with peripheral spreads edging marginally higher and euro area stocks recording losses. In the US, the trade threat put less downward pressure on sovereign bond yields. World equity markets also registered some losses.
In currency markets, the dollar depreciated against its major peers, including the euro and the yen. In commodities, gold prices increased amid renewed trade uncertainties, while oil prices closed the session slightly higher amid investor concerns over the latest round of nuclear talks between the US and Iran.
